The Sackler and Epstein scandals of the past few years are bringing ethics and risk management to the forefront. As donors and their gifts come from an ever-wider net, how is your team (and their leadership) keeping potential risks in mind? We will discuss potential pitfalls of due diligence, how to adhere to APRA’s Code of Ethics (no matter how small or large your shop is) and what to do if you come across some risky business (including examples in our own work).  We will clarify the key differences between prospect research and due diligence research and give some tips and tricks to go about it in an efficient and ethical way.

After our discussion, attendees should feel empowered to draft a due diligence policy for their organization (or to encourage other to do so), and have greater knowledge of the best resources to complete this work. They will also have a greater understand of the differences between prospect research and due diligence research. The ethics needed and risks involved with completing due diligence work will also be discussed.

Jayme Klein

Jayme began her career in development in 2008 at the Rutgers University Foundation, where she spent the next seven years, first in prospect management and then prospect research. She spent several years at Monmouth University as their senior prospect research analyst, working with the fundraising staff, university president, and top leadership. She has worked as both a volunteer and consultant for non-profits in the areas of research and writing. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Drew University and a master of communication and information sciences from Rutgers University. She is a member of APRA’s Online Content Committee. Jayme joined The Helen Brown Group in April 2019.

Michele Borucki

Michele began her career in development in 2012 as a Development Analyst with the University of California, Berkeley Corporate and Foundation Relations team. She served as a Prospect Analyst at University of California, Davis and then as a Senior Prospect Analyst at the George Washington University. Michele is a member of NEDRA, Apra Florida, and Apra International and previously served as the Social Media Chair for Apra Metro DC. She received her BA in creative writing from Florida State University and studied higher education leadership at California State University, Sacramento. She currently lives in Tampa, FL with her husband and two children. Michele joined the Helen Brown Group in July 2018.
