Randomistas Deconstructed: Employing Randomized Control Trial Concepts to Build Better Predictive Models

This case study details the use of concepts germane to randomized control trial (RCT) set-ups: 1) creating a randomly selected sample from the database equal to the size of the outcome of interest, and 2) controlling for specific characteristics via statistical matching. The case study will compare and evaluate modeling results without and with RCT concept implementation.

Kendra Yoder is a senior research analyst in the Office of Prospect Management & Analytics at Penn State University since April 2011 where she is so fortunate to work with an amazing team of professionals. In her position, Kendra has had the opportunity to assist with key projects for Penn State’s large research team. These include: Continuing Care Retirement Centers (CCRCs) project to identify prospects living in upscale CCRCs in regions across the country; Power BI mapping as a replacement for MapPoint; automated real estate value look-ups; the updating of internally-defined geo codes based on high concentrations of alumni and friend populations nationwide, and most recently, the implementation of redefined wealthy zip codes. Prior to joining Prospect Management & Analytics, Kendra was employed in Alumni and Public Relations in the Graduate School at Penn State where she had the opportunity to work closely with an alumni society board. In this role, she planned and coordinated a variety of events, including alumni reunions, board meetings, recognition dinners, award functions, guest speaker series and commencement luncheons. A Penn State alumna with a B.A. in Mass Communications, Kendra resides in State College, Pa. with her husband and two cats. She has two grown sons, one a Penn State graduate and the other a current student.

James Cheng currently holds the position of Senior Associate Director for Prospect Identification & Analytics under Prospect Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute & The Jimmy Fund’s Division of Philanthropy. Other than fundraising, he has made intellectual and professional forays into cell and development biology, high school teaching, academic research in education, as well as healthcare market research. While finishing up a doctorate degree in applied statistics in education at Boston College, James' interest in philanthropy was piqued when he took on the role of Prospect Data Mining and Modeling Specialist at MIT. After spending time in the corporate world as a healthcare market researcher, James left the Dark Side and returned to the Light of fundraising data science, first at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute as Associate Director and then at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as Development Data Analytics Specialist and Senior Data Scientist.
