Apra is excited to bring you Apra Fundamentals: Prospect Research! Join us for online networking opportunities and learning exercises combined with additional learning in the weeks leading up to the event. You will not only have access to the online community of attendees and faculty experts, but also the opportunity to attend a virtual program taking place this Winter 2025. Exact dates will be forthcoming shortly. The program focuses on the four key areas of prospect development: Campaigns, Prospect Research, Prospect Management, and Data Science. It also explores fundraising terms and technologies as well as techniques and resources for finding and analyzing biographical, background, and financial information; introduces participants to corporate and foundation research, and delves into how available data can be used to formulate gift capacities and inform fundraising operations. In addition, the program covers guiding concepts related to prospect research, such as navigating ethical considerations in conducting research, best practices for managing and reporting prospect data and creating quality research products.

Priya Balachandran

Prospect Research and Management Specialist

Northern Illinois Food Bank

Priya Balachandran serves as the Prospect Research & Management Specialist at Northern Illinois Food Bank, where she manages all aspects of Prospect Development for the organization. In this role, she has helped establish structured approaches to prospect research and is currently implementing a new Prospect Management process to support her team. Beyond her primary responsibilities, Priya is a committed contributor to organization-wide initiatives. She has served on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, where she helped launch the Data and Ethics Subcommittee, and participated in the Strategic Plan UNITE - Pathway Advisory Committee. She is currently an active member of the Changemakers Taskforce.

Priya actively volunteers and has presented for Apra International and its local chapters. She is serving a second term on Apra International’s Fundamentals Committee, has volunteered on the Awards Committee, and currently serves on the Apra Illinois board.

In the broader nonprofit community, Priya co-leads programs with the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Chicago's Continuous Learning Council and has contributed to launching and co-leading Feeding America’s Philanthropy Operations and Analytics Community of Practice. She also teaches at HTGC, a local nonprofit organization, where she developed an online teaching curriculum. Additionally, she has contributed to planning nonprofit sector conferences, including the 5th International Thirukkural Conference and the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance’s Elevate Conference.

Selene Hur

Manager, Prospect Development & Research

YMCA of Greater Toronto

For over 15 years, Selene Hur has been the first and only Manager of Prospect Development and Research at the YMCA of Greater Toronto. She established the Y’s research function and prospect management system, and continues to refine it as the team has grown. Selene enjoys welcoming new talent to our profession and taught for several years at Humber College and Georgian College. She has also presented at several conferences, with a focus on prospect development for small to mid-sized fundraising teams. As an avid volunteer, Selene is the current Chair of Apra Fundamentals, board member of Toronto Wildlife Centre, former board member of Apra International, and past president of Apra Canada. She is the 2024 recipient of Apra’s Margaret Fuhry Award in recognition of her commitment to prospect development through leadership, mentorship and volunteerism.

Selene has a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Arts and Cultural Management) from the University of Waterloo, Graduate Diploma in Nonprofit Administration from the John Molson School of Business, and Masters of Information Studies from the University of Toronto.

Peter Kotowski

Director, Prospect Development

University of Denver

Pete Kotowski is the Director of Prospect Development for the University of Denver. In this role, he is responsible for implementing a prospect management system, overseeing prospect identification processes and research efforts, and division-wide pipeline management as DU enters the public phase of its capital campaign. Prior to this, Pete held a number of roles on the Prospect Management & Research team at Loyola University Chicago, where he also serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of History. Pete has served in a number of volunteer rolls with Apra International and Apra-IL, including serving as a member of the Apra International Conference Planning Committee and as the current president of Apra-IL. Pete has a BA in History and Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh and a PhD in American History from Loyola University Chicago, where his research focused on the relationship between Quakerism, conceptions of manhood, and unfree labor in early Pennsylvania.

Lindsay Rogillio

Director of Prospect Development & Analytics

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation

Lindsay Rogillio is the Director of Prospect Development and Analytics at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, leading the prospect management, prospect research, and prospect data analytics efforts. Prior to her current position, Lindsay spent nearly 10 years in higher education prospect development offices at the University of South Carolina and Virginia Commonwealth University. She has volunteered with aasp's Membership Engagement Committee and Best Practices in Prospect Development Committee. She holds a master's in library and information science from the University of South Carolina, and is completing a master's in decision analytics from Virginia Commonwealth University. Lindsay loves traveling, salsa dancing, and enjoying every food festival she can make it to.

Rachael Dietrich Walker

Donor Strategy Manager

St. Luke's Health Foundation

Rachael Dietrich Walker is entering her fifteenth year in prospect development. In June 2024, she joined St. Luke's Health Foundation as its first Donor Strategy Manager, where she is building a brand new prospect development program. She comes to healthcare after a career spent in higher education. Rachael is a longtime member of the Apra Carolinas board and currently serves as its President; she has also served in several volunteer roles for Apra International, most recently on the 2024 Nominating Committee.  She holds an MLIS from UNC-Greensboro and a BA from the University of Richmond.
